Here is the catch: - if you want to work for free, that's OK, but what if you get injured at work? Are you insured? Who will pay for the consequenses? This is why most of the colleges will provide their students with insurance during their work practicum (i.e.when the students are working for free to get some experience) - if the posintion demands a lot of responsibilities, they will prefer to get someone paid handsomely and fully responsible for what he is doing, rather than taking a guy that is ready to work for free to prove himself; this is why when some company is looking for a volunteer, I get suspisious.
